In preparation of our road trip to Yellowstone I’ve been pouring through the pages of #TravelsWithCharley. As I read it I realized a few strange similarities between our trips. ___ Firstly, the middle section of his trip in the book is almost the exact route I plan to follow. ___ Secondly, for his trip he planned to pass through Canada via Niagara, but found himself going through Pennsylvania instead - with the need of a passport I decided to save money instead. ___ Lastly, he found his dog and Yellowstone didn’t workout well - in a similar turn of events it turns out I need a permit (that I can’t afford) to take pictures with #TheOrangeChair in National Parks. Thus I will have to take creative pictures outside of the parks. ___ Altogether, though, this book got me excited to explore some new states, books, and locations in less than two weeks. Sometimes I just need an adventure novel to escape into for a few days. 'The Time Machine' was perfect for this. I've only read a few of Well's novels, but I'm always intrigued by the premises he writes about. This one was no exception. I was first introduced to this story through the 1960 film, so I knew the basic story, but I was still drawn in and quite enjoyed an engaging adventure that only took a short time to read. I enjoy finding places where the present frames by the past. This cabin in the Swatara State Park is an amazing example - hidden away at the base of a waterfall few people know about. Books written about writing and living always intrigue me. The simplicity of the words between the pages have a strange depth to them. _ As I read ‘A Moveable Feast’ it didn’t seem like much was going on, but at the same moment I wanted to be there to see for myself. Having enjoyed 'War and Peace' so much when I read it I thought I'd give 'Anna Karenina' a try. At first I was skeptical knowing the basic plot of the story, but as I read it, I fell in love with the depth of the story and its characters. What I loved the most was the contrast of the two main narratives and the search of both Anna and Levin as they searched for meaning, purpose and happiness in their lives. __ I know the book is named for Anna Karenina, but I really connected with Levin on a level I haven't with a fictional character before. His love of nature, his compassion for peasants, his love for his wife, and his search for morality and a spiritual significance really stuck with me. In many ways I feel as if I'm currently in a similar place as well, and to see how his search for meaning opened up his life before him. __ I definitely would look forward to reading this again. In 2010, as the concept for ‘The Orange Chair’ was taking form, I read (and re-read) some books that still inspire me to this day. Some I finished in just one day and others took me months, but 4 of these 5 books (I wasn’t a huge fan of ‘David Copperfield’) were books that inspired me to press through, stretch my mind, and read more classic novels.
