I can see how ‘Ten Little Indians’ (or ‘And Then There Were None’ as it is now known) is considered Agatha Christie’s best. Not that I have read any other of Agatha Christie’s work - I haven’t - but this story was one I couldn’t put down. The set-up for the whole thing was a bit tedious at first. I began to wonder how she could make a story about ten different people not long and drawn out, but I was surprised at how that is the very thing that made the book great. Ten people, ten perspectives, who was the killer, who could you trust, who was next, etc… There isn’t much more more to say. Someone once gave me three Agatha Christie books and yet I had never read any of her books before. So when I saw her book ‘And Then There Were None’ was on the list for #TheGreatAmericanRead I got my books out to see what I had. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Turns out none of them had that title - which was a bummer. Being I had gone so far as to look I decided to see if the ones I had were any good. But as I was researching them I found out one book I had - ‘Ten Little Indians’ - was in fact the same book with an old title. ‘Gathering Blue’ is a book I’ve been wanting to read since I found out about it in college. I have always loved ‘The Giver’ and was excited to read another story from the same author. This year (almost 10 years later) I finally decided to pick it up. It wasn’t as inspiring as ‘The Giver’ had been, and seemed to have less overall depth to it, but there are aspects of the book that I really loved. The world that Kira lived in felt similar to Jonas’, but was, in the end, vastly different. ‘The Giver’ focused so much on an utopian society that centered on equality. In ‘Gathering Blue’, however, there is poverty and people are cast aside if they are seen to be a hinderance to the community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Even with her disabilities, however, Kira, like Jonas in ‘The Giver’, is given a special task and brought into a section of society that is unknown to most. As she works on the Singer’s Robe, mends the intricately woven designs, and learns to create dyes for her work, she begins to look at the world differently. She goes beyond the confines of her room to seek the answers to her questions about art, ability, freedom and the future. 'The Idiot' is an intriguing book. Like many of Dostoyevsky's books there is a depth of dialog within in that one must dig through to find all it's meaning. Yet, in the same breath, the characters are relatable. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Prince Myshkin (aka 'The Idiot) has a strange innocence and likability about him. It is something that keeps getting him caught up in dilemmas where he, in his ignorance, often goes with the flow and often makes things worse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The world around him takes advantage of him, tricks him, and throws him around, but he changes very little over the course of the book. I don’t know how I never discovered ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ in school years. Instead I was introduced to the story when I went to the movies for the first time with Antonia to see ‘Hugo’. It is still one of my favorite movies! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Right before our wedding we bought a copy of the book to bring and read on our honeymoon. Never before have I see a children’s book with such depth of creativity. Both the art and the story were compelling from cover to cover. It’s just that sometimes, at a certain point, one stops telling them.” - Mary Norton ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I remembered parts of this book as a child, but not the whole story, so I decided to read it out-loud with my wife, and it was the perfect book for out-loud reading. Such a simple, yet fun adventure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I really love the creative uses for each of the small things that the Borrowers borrow, and seeing the world from a different vantage-point. It is so easy to connect with the desire Arrietty has to explore and see the world beyond the grandfather clock.
